Poor Planning

By Blaise

I decided to travel to South America two years ago. I’ve always wanted to see it. The idea to travel through the whole continent in one shot never occurred to me though, until reading, then watching The Motorcycle Diaries, based on the story of Che Guevara’s motorcycle trip.

Initially I wanted to do just that. Travel the continent on two wheels and go where no car or bus could take me. When I delved a little deeper, not only was the cost prohibitive (Shipping a motorcycle from Canada and back) but the idea of drunken freedom on the open road, was chastised with the sobering reality that the motorcycle, together with all it’s contents would likely become a ball and chain. I would never be able to leave it unattended or my belongings safely stored.

So now, I’m taking mixed means of transportation, air; bus; car, and yes, I will rent a motorcycle for some of it, but only the most dangerous and exciting parts.

I have a flight in to Rio de Janeiro and four months later, I have a flight out of Bogota, Columbia. Besides a few short internal flights within Brazil, Argentina and Peru, the rest will all work itself out in the end. If it has not, it is not…….the end.
